Polypropylene (PP plastic, recycling code #5)

🟢 LOW — Safe

Why is it safe?

Polypropylene is one of the safest common plastics, food-safe, BPA-free, and with very low chemical toxicity. Many cat food bowls, water fountains, litter boxes, and carriers are made of PP. Chemical risk is negligible; physical risk from ingesting fragments is the only concern.

Symptoms

None from chemical exposure. Ingested fragments: vomiting, potential obstruction or laceration depending on size and shape of fragment.

What To Do

Small piece incidentally ingested: monitor for 24–48 hours for obstruction signs. Large or sharp fragment: vet visit.

Notes

Cracked or broken PP accessories create sharp edges and should be replaced immediately. PP is identifiable by the recycling symbol #5. When purchasing cat accessories, PP is among the safer material choices compared to plastics that may contain BPA, phthalates, or PVC.
