Dry Cat Food

Dry Cat Food

Not all dry cat food is equally safe or nutritionally adequate. Quality varies substantially by ingredient sourcing, protein content, processing standards, and whether the formulation is backed by AAFCO feeding trials rather than calculated nutrient profiles. Poor-quality dry food creates long-term health risks including obesity (from high carbohydrate formulas), chronic kidney disease (from excessive phosphorus and low moisture), and urinary tract disease. Cats are obligate carnivores, dietary protein must come primarily from animal sources.

Key quality indicators: Named animal protein as the first ingredient (chicken, salmon, turkey, not "meat" or "animal derivatives" without species specification). AAFCO statement referencing "feeding trials" (not just "formulated to meet"). Taurine supplemented. Crude protein ≥30% dry matter. Crude fat ≥15% dry matter. Carbohydrates ideally <30% dry matter.

Economy brands with documented nutritional concerns (MEDIUM risk, not acutely dangerous, nutritionally suboptimal for long-term feeding): Brands where cereals (wheat, corn, rice) appear as the first two or three ingredients before any named protein. Brands using "meat and animal derivatives" or "animal by-products" without species specification. Products with artificial colorings (no nutritional function in cat food). Products with ash content >8% (suggests lower-quality protein sources).

Additional notes: "Grain-free" is not synonymous with high quality. Several grain-free brands replace grains with legumes (peas, lentils, chickpeas), the FDA investigated a potential link between high-legume dry diets and dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs; feline evidence is less established but warrants caution. "Natural," "ancestral," and "biologically appropriate" are unregulated marketing terms that do not indicate better nutritional quality or safety.
