Wet Cat Food

Wet Cat Food

Wet food has significant advantages for feline health: high moisture content (75–82%) supports urinary tract health, and most formulas have lower carbohydrate content than dry food. However, quality varies considerably. Economy pouches may rely on gelling agents, unnamed by-products, and artificial colorings while delivering low actual meat content. EU labeling law allows a product to be called "with chicken" if it contains as little as 4% chicken, this is critical context for reading labels.

Key quality indicators: Named protein as the primary ingredient. Moisture content 75–82%. No artificial colorings. Taurine supplemented. Minimal thickeners (carrageenan is controversial, some research links it to GI inflammation). Moderate phosphorus. AAFCO feeding trial statement preferred.

Additional notes: Wet food should not be left out more than 4 hours at room temperature. Once opened, refrigerate and use within 24–48 hours. The EU "with" labeling loophole (4% minimum) means the named ingredient in budget products may be nearly negligible, always read the full ingredient list, not just the front-of-pack claim.
