Why is it risky?
Energy drinks combine high-dose caffeine (80–300 mg per can), often with guarana (an additional caffeine source), B vitamins, and various stimulants. The caffeine and guarana content alone create toxicity risk equivalent to or exceeding strong coffee. Some sugar-free energy drinks also contain xylitol as a sweetener, which represents an additional independent toxic hazard.
Affected Systems
Nervous · Cardiovascular
Symptoms
Rapid heart rate, cardiac arrhythmias, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, hypertension, hyperthermia.
What To Do
Emergency vet. Treat as caffeine toxicity. Check label for xylitol if sugar-free variant.
Notes
Do not confuse the taurine in energy drinks with the cat's dietary need for taurine, in this context, caffeine is the primary concern. Sugar-free energy drink variants may contain xylitol (see Xylitol entry), an independently severe hazard that requires its own urgent response.
