Pumpkin (Plain, Cooked)

🟢 LOW — Safe

Why is it safe?

Plain cooked pumpkin is not toxic and is frequently recommended by veterinarians as a dietary fiber supplement for cats with mild constipation or soft stools. The soluble fiber helps regulate GI transit time. It is low in calories and well-tolerated by most cats.

Symptoms

None at appropriate amounts. Excessive amounts may cause soft stools.

What To Do

No action needed.

Notes

Use only plain cooked pumpkin or plain canned pumpkin purée, not pumpkin pie filling, which contains sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (neurotoxic to cats via myristicin), and sometimes xylitol. Remove seeds before offering. Canned plain pumpkin (100% pumpkin, no additives) is widely available and convenient.
