Silicone Earphone Tips and Wireless Earbuds

🟡 MEDIUM — Caution

Why is it risky?

Silicone and foam earphone tips are frequently ingested by cats, particularly young cats attracted to their small size, rubbery texture, and earwax scent. Silicone is chemically inert and non-toxic, but the small size means tips can cause GI obstruction. Wireless earbuds (AirPods, Galaxy Buds, etc.) contain lithium batteries and electronics, swallowing a complete earbud is a higher-risk emergency due to the battery component.

Affected Systems

Digestive

Symptoms

Single ear tip: vomiting, retching, anorexia if obstructing. Complete wireless earbud: as for battery ingestion (see Batteries entry).

What To Do

Ear tip ingested: monitor for 24–48 hours for obstruction. Complete earbud: emergency vet for imaging. Do not induce vomiting.

Notes

Store earphones in their case or a closed drawer. The combination of small size, rubbery texture, and earwax odor makes ear tips highly attractive. They are frequently replaced as worn items, dispose immediately in closed bins. Check floors and bedding regularly.
