Stainless Steel

🟢 LOW — Safe

Why is it safe?

Food-grade stainless steel (grades 304 and 316 are standard in food-contact applications) is non-toxic, non-reactive, and does not leach metal ions under normal conditions. It is among the safest materials for cat food bowls and water dishes. No chemical hazard exists under normal use.

Symptoms

None from chemical exposure. Physical hazard only from sharp edges on damaged items.

What To Do

No action needed.

Notes

Stainless steel food bowls are recommended by many veterinary dermatologists for cats prone to feline chin acne, plastic bowls harbor bacteria in microscopic surface scratches, contributing to follicular irritation. Grade 304 (18/8) is the standard minimum for food contact. Avoid chromium-plated items, which may contain cadmium or lead. Clean regularly to prevent bacterial biofilm.
