Pipe Cleaners (Chenille Stems)

🟡 MEDIUM — Caution

Why is it risky?

Pipe cleaners consist of a twisted metal wire core covered with synthetic fiber. The wire core can puncture oral tissue, the esophagus, or intestinal wall if swallowed, and metal shards cause internal lacerations. The fiber covering may be ingested and accumulate in the GI tract. Despite their flexible, prey-like movement making them attractive cat play suggestions online, they are not appropriate cat toys.

Affected Systems

Digestive

Symptoms

Oral lacerations (drooling, reluctance to eat), GI perforation (acute abdomen, vomiting, fever), obstruction.

What To Do

If wire is ingested: emergency vet. Do NOT induce vomiting, wire causes additional lacerations. Imaging needed to locate.

Notes

Pipe cleaners are suggested as DIY cat toys in a significant amount of online content, this is a safety error. The wire inside creates an internal laceration hazard regardless of how the toy is shaped. Safe alternatives with similar flexible movement: fabric-tipped wand toys, soft spring toys designed specifically for cats.
