Manufacturer: Mars Petcare
Why is it safe?
Greenies Feline Dental Treats hold a Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal, independently verified evidence of efficacy in reducing tartar accumulation through mechanical abrasion during chewing. This distinguishes them from the vast majority of "dental" cat treats on the market that make tartar-reduction claims without independent verification. The ingredient list is controlled, with named chicken as the primary protein source and a formulation specifically designed for texture rather than palatability enhancement alone.
Symptoms
None expected at recommended serving. Occasional GI sensitivity in cats with digestive issues, the textured matrix is denser than standard treats.
What To Do
No action needed. Not a replacement for professional veterinary dental cleaning, a complementary preventive measure.
Notes
The VOHC seal is the critical differentiator to communicate to SafeCatBase users, it means independent verification, not manufacturer claims. Only a small number of feline dental products carry it. Other VOHC-accepted cat dental products worth cross-referencing: Hill's Prescription Diet t/d (dental diet dry food), some Purina Pro Plan dental formulations. Important limitation: dental treats are effective at mechanical tartar reduction on the tooth surface the treat contacts, but cannot substitute for subgingival cleaning (below the gumline) that only professional scaling provides. Note: Mars also produces Dreamies (formerly Whiskas Temptations in some markets), a high-palatability economy treat without the VOHC credential or the quality benchmark of Greenies, despite the same parent company.
