Why is it risky?
Butter isn't toxic, but it's not a healthy food for cats either. It's almost pure fat with trace lactose, and cats (most of whom are lactose-intolerant to some degree as adults) can experience GI upset. Regular consumption of high-fat foods also carries a long-term pancreatitis risk.

Vomiting, diarrhea, loose stools shortly after ingestion. With repeated high-fat intake: signs of pancreatitis (lethargy, abdominal pain, reduced appetite).
What To Do
No emergency action needed for small accidental licks. If a cat consistently eats butter or shows repeated GI symptoms, cut it out and consult a vet.
