Why is it risky?
Latex has low systemic chemical toxicity in small amounts, but latex products pose choking, obstruction, and allergic reaction risks. Ingested latex pieces (from gloves, balloons, or rubber toys) can cause intestinal obstruction. Some cats develop latex sensitivity with repeated exposure, triggering allergic responses.
Affected Systems
Digestive · Skin
Symptoms
Ingestion: vomiting, diarrhea, potential obstruction. Allergic reaction: skin hives, facial swelling, respiratory distress (rare but potentially severe).
What To Do
Small piece ingested: monitor for 24–48 hours for obstruction signs. Large piece ingested: vet visit. Suspected allergic reaction (facial swelling, respiratory distress): emergency vet.
Notes
Latex balloons are a particular hazard, cats are attracted to them and can ingest fragments when balloons deflate or pop. Nitrile gloves are a safer alternative to latex gloves in households with cats. Natural latex and synthetic latex (polyisoprene) carry similar physical risks.
