Why is it risky?

Pothos contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals throughout all parts of the plant. When chewed or ingested, these microscopic crystals penetrate the soft tissues of the mouth, throat and digestive tract, causing immediate pain and irritation. While rarely life-threatening, exposure causes significant discomfort and can be dangerous if large amounts are ingested.

Oral irritation, pawing at the mouth, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the lips and tongue

What To Do

Rinse your cat's mouth gently with water. If symptoms persist or vomiting continues, contact your veterinarian. Keep the plant out of reach.

Notes

One of the most common household plants and one of the most frequent causes of plant-related vet visits. Despite its MEDIUM rating, it should be kept completely out of reach.
