Daffodil

Narcissus spp.

๐Ÿ”ด HIGH โ€” Dangerous

Why is it risky?

Daffodils contain lycorine and other alkaloids throughout the entire plant, with the highest concentration in the bulb. These compounds cause vomiting and can affect the heart and nervous system. Ingestion of the bulb in particular can cause severe symptoms and is considered a veterinary emergency.

Affected Systems

Digestive ยท Nervous ยท Cardiovascular

Symptoms

Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, excessive drooling, low blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, tremors, convulsions.

What To Do

Contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat has ingested any part of a daffodil, especially the bulb. This is particularly relevant in spring when bulbs are being planted or stored in the home.

Notes

Daffodil bulbs are often stored indoors before planting, making them accessible to curious cats. Keep bulbs in sealed containers out of reach. All varieties of Narcissus (including jonquils and paperwhites) are toxic.
