Why is it risky?

Sago palm is one of the most toxic plants for cats. All parts of the plant contain cycasin, a potent toxin that causes severe liver failure. The seeds (nuts) contain the highest concentration and are extremely dangerous even in very small amounts. Ingestion frequently results in death without prompt veterinary treatment.

Symptoms

Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes), bleeding disorders, liver failure, seizures.

What To Do

This is a life-threatening emergency. If your cat has ingested any part of a sago palm, contact your veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately. Do not wait for symptoms, liver damage begins before symptoms appear. Time is critical.

Notes

Sago palm is popular as a decorative plant both indoors and outdoors. It is one of the most common causes of fatal plant poisoning in cats and dogs. If you have a sago palm at home, remove it entirely. There is no safe way to keep this plant in a home with cats.
